7:00 pm : Black History with Albert Cook
Tues., March 9th, 7PM
Session 1: The Creation of Racial Caste in American and U.S. History
In exploring the creation of racial caste in America, we will delve into the question of how Western Europeans, who came from a variety of tribal, ethnic/ and linguistic backgrounds become "white" and what was the purpose of calling similarly diverse West African people "black". We will also explore the contemporary ramifications of the creation of a racial caste system.
Albert Cook has been a member of the Social Studies Department at New Paltz High School for 23 years, where he currently teaches World History, AP American History, and Black History. He is also an instructor in the Urban Education Initiative, Vassar College, where he has co-taught classes on the Legacy of Dr. King, the History of Black Voter Disenfranchisement, and the History and Legacy of Mass Incarceration.
He has been a guest lecturer throughout the Hudson Valley area addressing issues surrounding the History of African Cultures and the development of Race and Racism in North America.
