67:00 pm : Black History with Albert Cook![]() April 6, 2021 – Tues., April 6th, 7PM Session 3: Race and Sports In this more light-hearted session we will deal with the question that arises when folks have accepted the established idea (anthropology and bio-genetics), that race (connecting one's features to their capabilities or any other internal traits) is not biologically real. The question is then: "Why do sports in America seem to indicate that race is indeed, biological?" The discussion will look at how economics and racial attitudes shape the way that Americans consume sports. Albert Cook has been a member of the Social Studies Department at New Paltz High School for 23 years, where he currently teaches World History, AP American History, and Black History. He is also an instructor in the Urban Education Initiative, Vassar College, where he has co-taught classes on the Legacy of Dr. King, the History of Black Voter Disenfranchisement, and the History and Legacy of Mass Incarceration. He has been a guest lecturer throughout the Hudson Valley area addressing issues surrounding the History of African Cultures and the development of Race and Racism in North America. In November 2020, Mr. Cook began a ten-episode radio series on Black History and the History of Racism; you can catch up HERE online at radiokingston.org.
