A Note From Library Director, Crystal Middleton

New Year Greetings!

Happy New Year, Elting community. I hope your holidays were nourishing and easeful. We're pleased to step into 2026 together with you.

Some portions of 2025 may have been difficult. Martin Luther King Jr. stated that, “We must accept finite disappointment, but never lose infinite hope." I find so much hope in this community: one that cares about learning and sharing: one that celebrates children and young people; one that stands by its ideals for freedom to read and think freely.

There's a lot happening in January, and we invite you to join in! I do hope the year brings you many good things: peace, abundance, health and well-being. Thanks for being a part of the Elting Library community in the new year!

-Crystal Middleton, Library Director

In 1909, members of the New Paltz Study Club were the first to realize the need for a free library association in the village of New Paltz. Seven women from the club formed a committee and opened a reading room on the second floor of the building at 60-62 Main Street.

The Study Club assumed the expenses and hired Miss Flora Schoonmaker as librarian. It wasn’t long before the library outgrew it’s first home on Main Street and the search for a new building began.
